| the sensual, flowing form of this project resulted from a series of form-finding experiments carried out for foster & partners for the overarching carapace of a tri-theatre complex. challenged to devise new ways of deriving such forms elegantly we didn’t so much ‘design’ the form as to create methods by which the form could find itself - as a series of forces acting on elastic surfaces. the slight indeterminacy of the process was nonetheless highly precise, since we worked with mathematicians and used highly accurate 3d engineering software. this marks a shift away from auto-determinism as a creative strategy. design team: mark goulthorpe, gaspard giroud, arnaud descombes. technical design: mark burry deakin university. mathematical studies: alex scott. |
