| commissioned to build a folly, we were struck by the absence of any determined brief. beneath the site are a series of inaccessible limestone caves, which haunt the collective imagination, and we have taken this as our cue to tear a digital cave out of the terrain. the splines are linked to create a series of constrained surfaces, such that as we deform the surfaces we create a series of inflections that pocket space. by facetting these surfaces and then thickening them along their length, the surface becomes structurally robust. the final structure/surface will be in fiberglass. design team: mark goulthorpe, julian lomessy. parametric design: mark burry, andrew maher, greg more. engineers: david glover & ed clark ovearup& partners.
