eco taal taal volcano philippines 1996
this project is located on a dramatic knoll overlooking the magnificent caldera of taal volcano in the philippines. it acts as a centre of exhibition and debate, a simple series of spaces arranged linearly following the contours of the dramatic, plunging terrain. a series of curling vaults folds the building softly back into the terrain, creating a protective carapace to volcanic debris(!) and a filter to the harsh environment, allowing penetration of morning light and afternoon breeze. the complex-curved shells were to be fabricated by local boat-builders in natural timber. design team: mark goulthorpe, arnaud descombes, antoine regnaud, gaspard giroud. engineering: david glover ovearup&p.
