EXCAVATE HABITATE 2
The town is arranged around a central square and numerous outer activity nodes which are situated where alternate transport routes meet. Neighborhoods are encouraged to develop around these activity nodes all containing a combination of public, commercial and domestic activity. Excavation allows variation in street level which creates a hierarchy between public, private and semi private space. Twisting the dug forms in section means that a commercial unit can face onto a thoroughfare at one level with an attached domestic unit addressing its own semi private garden on the reverse side above. The local population can negotiate the town via the excavated streets and alleys or choose to travel across the open landscape at rooftop level. The intention within the project is that the excavated approach to built form and the variations in level will lend the town a very strong architectural identity, without being overly prescriptive about particular building typologies.
