The solarfall reimagines the viaducts of the Autostrada del Sole as both moving sculptures and as power stations. This dual use is achieved through the installation of helical solar turbines to generate electricity from the wind and sun simultaneously. The turbines hang from the bridges and move with the wind, rotating and billowing, while glinting in the sun. This ‘curtain’ plays upon and reveals the unique monumental quality of the viaducts. The south-north carriageway is planted and landscaped into a new sustainability park with routes for bicycles and walkers as well as labs and educational facilities; cafes and showcase biofuel and green technologies such as zero carbon vehicles. The north-south carriageway becomes a renewed conduit for the fragile SS18 highway, while providing support for the solarfall. The old tunnels of the motorway are converted to huge electricity transfer and storage stations to allow for the variance in power generated by the turbines.
