Calabria Skybelt is a radical re-editing of existing infrastructure and conditions. The purpose is to improve the quality of life in Calabria by focusing on the triple bottom line of Ecology, Economy, and Society.
For the main structure, we transform shipping containers and the cranes themselves to produce an ecological transportation infrastructure never seen before. The materials come from the local port of Gioia Tauro. Instead of wasting energy and resources in disposal, these cranes and containers are re-purposed to become the crux of a new multi-mode transportation system that carries people through the sky. Not only do containers become stations, they are made into buses themselves. On arrival they are hoisted along and aerial tramway and connected with the Calabria Skybelt. This new infrastructure creates a framework for new economies by increasing connectivity and bolstering local tourism and commerce. It will become an icon of the Calabrian spirit.
