Urbanism beyond Rome
Nel momento delle riflessioni sul futuro della metropoli parigina, la mostra Roma UneternalCity offre un nuovo sguardo sul futuro della città europea.
Riuniti sotto la direzione di Aaron Betsky, architetto, critico e direttore del Cincinnati Art Museum, dodici team di architetti internazionali* arricchiscono il dibattito a partire dalle problematiche romane condivise: la mobilità e l'accessibilità, l'habitat e l'espansione urbana, l’economia e l’ecologia … Nuove prospettive, suggerite dagli architetti stessi, UneternalCity ha l’obiettivo di comprendere la trasformazione della città contemporanea.
Trent’anni dopo l’esposizione-manifesto itinerante «Roma Interrotta» (1978) ** che proponeva visioni urbane utopiche e aleatorie della città storica, UneternalCity elabora strategie innovative a partire dalla ridefinizione dei limiti geografici attuali e futuri della capitale italiana. Ieri, Venturi, Krier, Graves, Rowe, Portoghesi, Rossi, Sartogo o Stirling... Oggi, Big, Centola, Delogu, Giammetta&Giammetta, Koning, Labics, Mad, N!Studio, Nemesi, NewWestLand, TStudio o West 8... propongono la loro versione della città eterna.
Ogni team, attraverso lo sviluppo di tematiche contemporanee, affronta i problemi della capitale italiana di oggi e di domani. Ciascun progetto esplora spazi e tessuti urbani diversi, allontanandosi dai sentieri conosciuti. UneternalCity non pretende di offrire nuove costruzioni o un piano di sviluppo futuro, ma piuttosto propone la ricerca di un diverso sviluppo urbano, che non ha come punto di partenza una pianificazione astratta bensì una urbanità nutrita dalla vita e dall’energia presenti nella città.
Presentata, in parte, per la prima volta alla Biennale Internazionale di Architettura a Venezia nel 2008, la mostra diventata UneternalCity.fr, è la base per lo sviluppo di un laboratorio aperto di studio sulla città, "in grado di coinvolgere gli architetti italiani e internazionali e le istituzioni in un percorso progettuale, che permetta di definire i nuovi obiettivi e gli strumenti di sviluppo del progetto stesso o dei suoi costi economici e ambientali”.
Ospitando questa mostra visionaria, il Pavillon de l'Arsenal vuole mettere in evidenza le problematiche urbane contemporanee di due città capitali, le cui storie e gli interrogativi sono la conseguenza di tematiche reciproche, e consentire a tutti di contribuire alla discussione per la città di domani.

À l'heure des réflexions sur l'avenir de la métropole parisienne, l'exposition Rome Uneternal City propose un regard renouvelé sur l'avenir de la ville européenne.
Réunis sous la direction d'Aaron Betsky, architecte, critique et directeur du Cincinnati Art Museum, douze équipes d'architectes internationaux* enrichissent le débat à partir des problématiques romaines mais partagées: mobilité et accessibilité, habitat et étalement urbain, économie et écologie... Exposition prospective, portée par les architectes eux-mêmes, Uneternal City a pour but d’appréhender la transformation de la ville contemporaine.
Trente ans après l’exposition manifeste itinérante «Roma Interrotta» (1978)** qui proposait des visions urbaines utopiques et aléatoires de la ville historique, Uneternal City, élabore des stratégies innovantes en partant de la redéfinition des limites géographiques actuelles et futures de la capitale italienne. Hier, Venturi, Krier, Graves, Rowe, Portoghesi, Rossi, Sartogo ou Stirling... aujourd’hui Big, Centola, Delogu, Giammetta&Giammetta, Koning, Labics, Mad, N!Studio, Nemesi, NewWestLand, TStudio ou West 8... proposent leur version pour la ville éternelle.
Chaque équipe au travers des thématiques contemporaines aborde les enjeux de la capitale italienne d'aujourd'hui et de demain. Chaque projet explore des espaces et des tissus urbains, hors des sentiers battus. Uneternal City ne prétend offrir ni construction nouvelle ni plan d'avenir mais plutôt la recherche d’un urbanisme différent qui n’ait pas comme point de départ une planification abstraite mais un urbanisme nourrit de la vie et de l’énergie présentes dans la cité.
Présentée, partiellement, pour la première fois à la biennale internationale d'architecture de Venise 2008, l'exposition devenue UneternalCity.fr veut être le point de départ pour un laboratoire associatif ouvert d’études sur la ville, "capable d’engager les architectes italiens et internationaux et les institutions dans un parcours qui permette de définir les objectifs nouveaux et les instruments de développement qu’il s’agisse du projet lui-même ou de son coût économique et environnemental".
En accueillant cette exposition prospective le Pavillon de l'Arsenal souhaite mettre en regard les problématiques urbaines contemporaines de deux villes capitales dont l'histoire, et les questionnements reposent sur des enjeux réciproques pour permettre à chacun de contribuer au débat pour la ville de demain.

At the time of the reflections on the future of the metropolis of Paris, the exhibition Rome UneternalCity offers a new look on the future of the European city.
Gathered under the direction of Aaron Betsky, architect, critic and director of the Cincinnati Art Museum, twelve teams of international architects * enrich the debate starting from the roman shared issues: mobility and accessibility, housing and urban sprawl, economy and ecology… New perspectives, suggested by the architects themselves, UneternalCity aims to understand the transformation of the contemporary city.
Thirty years after the traveling exhibition manifesto “Roma interrotta” (1978) ** that proposed urban utopian and random visions of the historical city, UneternalCity develops innovative strategies from the redefinition of the geographical limits of present and future of the Italian capital. Yesterday, Venturi, Krier, Graves, Rowe, Portoghesi, Rossi, Sartogo or Stirling... Today, Big, Centola, Delogu, Giammetta & Giammetta, Koning, Labics, Mad, N! Studio, Nemesis, NewWestLand, TStudio or West 8… propose their version of the eternal city.
Each team, through the development of contemporary topics, faces the problems of the Italian capital today and tomorrow. Each project explores spaces and different urban material getting away from the familiar paths. UneternalCity doesn’t require to offer new constructions or a development plan for the future, but rather suggests the search for a different urban development, which hasn’t as its starting point an abstract planning but an urbanity nourished by the life and energy present in the city.
Presented, in part, for the first time at the Architecture Biennale in Venice 2008, the exhibition became UneternalCity.fr, it’s the basis for the development of an open laboratory on the city, "able to engage the Italian architects and international institutions in a planning route, which allows to define the new objectives and means of development of the project, or its economic and environmental costs".
By hosting this visionary exhibition , the Pavillon de l'Arsenal wants to highlight the urban contemporary problems of two capital cities, whose stories and questions are the result of mutual issues, and allow everyone to contribute to the discussion for the city of tomorrow.
