MASTER ARCHITECTURE /ENVIRONMENT
“Italy is an extraordinary and beautiful country, and at the same time very fragile.
The landscape and the city are fragile, particularly the suburban areas where sufficient time and money for maintenance has been lacking. Although these suburban areas are the cities of the future, the ones where human energy is concentrated and the ones we will leave as an inheritance to our children. A gigantic mending operation is necessary along with big ideas.”
Renzo Piano
Italy’s first independent School of Architecture has been created in Salerno with the aim of combining ethics and professional practice with research, strategic visions for the future and international experience. A systemic approach to sustainable construction is the fulcrum of the reunification between design, active environmental protection and economic development aimed at repairing the city and the landscape through collaborative projects developed by the faculty together with young designers.
Thanks to its various partnerships with the non-profit NIB, the online community at NewItalianBlood.com and Jobiz Formazione, the School is presenting an innovative professional Master-Lab inspired by the Anglo-Saxon model, bolstered by the contributions and invaluable experience of Italy’s new generation of authoritative architects, theorists, administrators, economists and technologists.
The first Master in Architecture/Environment will be witness to the participation of important and innovative Italian architects such as: Alvisi Kirimoto, Centola, Cucinella, Cutillo, De8, Faiferri, Grasso Cannizzo, Heliopolis 21, Labics, Mari, Marra, Mdu, Obr, Park, Russo, Tagliabue, Vaccarini, Vulcanica, Vultaggio. Workshops will be organised in small teams, similar to a super studio/lab. Projects will be developed over the course of five months for the: “Reuse of Black Holes”, abandoned, unfinished or confiscated buildings; the revitalisation of public spaces and neglected areas; regenerative urban development and suburban integration; interventions in favour of social programmes and tourism for the revitalisation of the local areas; case studies investigating various job opportunities, building experience and tips for adjusting portfolios to operate successfully in any professional situation.
Students will also have the opportunity to participate in a three month internship with such prestigious international offices as: Jean Nouvel, Coop Himmelb(l)au, UN Studio, Snøhetta, Steven Holl, Architecture Studio, Claudio Sivestrin, Rudy Ricciotti, Anton Garcia Abril, Marshall Strabala, Joao Nunes...
The programme features professional, technical, innovative hardware and software. Workshops will be operating a FabLab designed to support the latest generation of scanners, cutters and 3D printers, a model shop, conference rooms, exhibition spaces and multimedia workstations. The challenge for Nib and Jobiz is to build a cultural and professional centre integrated within a dynamic city that aims to elevate contemporary architecture to the role of a driving force for the overall quality of the built environment and its importance to the development of the city, tourism and economy.
The direct exploration of public and private projects under construction and designed by such important architects as Hadid, Chipperfield, Fuksas, Portoghesi and Calatrava, all in Salerno, link up perfectly with the masterpieces of Soleri and Niemeyer grafted in the extraordinary landscape of the Amalfi Coast, which can be a valuable framework for discussion and inspiration.
