Independent Project Records and Press. Musica e design tipografico nell’opera di Bruce Licher focalizza l’attenzione su alcuni tasselli fondamentali tratti dal variegato catalogo dell’etichetta. Tra questi, i 10” che compongono la “Archive Series” (For Against / In the marshes 1990, Autumnfair / Glaciers and gods 1990, Abecedarians / The other side of the fence 1990, Deception Bay / Fortune Days 1991, Fourwaycross / Pendulum 1993); 7” quali Savage Republic / Tragic Figures 1984, Red Temple Spirits / New land 1989, For Against / Don’t do me any favors 1993, Scenic / Sage 1996, Scenic – Lanterna / Live recordings 1997, ed infine i 12” Kommunity FK / Close one sad eye 1985, Scenic / Acquatica 1996.

Independent Project Records and Press
Music and typographic design in Bruce Licher’s work
By Direct Cut and Von Holden Studio
Opening on Saturday, April 19th, 2014 9.00 pm
From April 21th to May 10th
Tuesday-Saturday, 5-8 pm
From April 21th to May 10th, Von Holden Studio, in partnership with Direct Cut, presents and hosts Independent Project Records and Press. Music and typographic design in Bruce Licher’s work, an exhibition focusing on Bruce Licher’s 30-year career.
The exhibition opens on Saturday, April 19th, 2014, in conjunction with the Record Store Day’s seventh edition.
On the same day, starting from 6 pm, Rizzo Manufacture Studio will join the Record Store Day, hosting both the record labels from Palermo and a small preview of the exhibition.
Musician, artist, and designer Bruce Licher founded Independent Project Records in 1981 in Los Angeles, followed since 1982 by the Independent Project Press analog pressing house. These two outstanding experiences, which deeply marked the ’80s and ’90s Californian scene, represent another step towards the connection between music industry and design. A path traced by labels such as Factory, 4AD and Crass Records, sharing with IPR an undisputed ability in defining a comprehensive visual weltanschauung.
After establishing the Neef industrial collective and printing some noise-oriented 7” on Independent Project Records (Project 197, Bridge, Them Rhythm Ants), Licher and three UCLA colleagues founded the first incarnation of Savage Republic, formerly known as Africa Corps.
In 1982, Savage Republic released their masterpiece Tragic Figures LP, which started the Californian trance-rock: a trenchant mix of post-punk, psych-rock and primitive tribalism. Years later, this groundbreaking sound will be widely developed both by Red Temple Spirits and Licher’s Scenic, which may be defined as post-rock precursors.
In the same year, Licher, who learned the art of letterpress printing at the Los Angeles Women’s Graphic Centre, started planning and pressing all of the artworks for the IPR albums on his own. Following these experiences, Independent Project Press got born in Los Angeles, then moving for 17 years to Sedona, Arizona, and eventually settling in Bishop, a small town in East Sierra Nevada.
IPP’s signature works, as well as the promo material (postcards, invitations, fliers, and stamps) are meticulously crafted and realized almost only through letterpress printing on industrial-style chipboard.
It didn’t take long before Licher’s art spread beyond California: soon it caught the attention of clients such as Public Image Ltd., R.E.M., and Stereolab. Licher was nominated for two Grammy awards for his iconic artworks, which combine the analog pressing warmth with Licher’s uncommon approach to printing techniques. Two important exhibitions by New York’s National Design Cooper-Hewitt Museum and various exhibitions in U.S. and France recently praised his distinctive design.
Independent Project Records and Pressnfocuses on some milestones taken from the label’s catalogue: the 10” from the “Archive Series” (For Against / In the marshes 1990, Autumnfair / Glaciers and gods 1990, Abecedarians / The other side of the fence 1990, Deception Bay / Fortune Days 1991, Fourwaycross / Pendulum 1993); 7” as Savage Republic / Tragic Figures 1984, Red Temple Spirits / New land 1989, For Against / Don’t do me any favors 1993, Scenic / Sage 1996, Scenic – Lanterna / Live recordings 1997); and the 12” Kommunity FK / Close one sad eye 1985, Scenic / Acquatica 1996.
