AREA (Architecture Research Athens) is a professional design practice established in 2006 by architects Styliani Daouti, Giorgos Mitroulias and Michaeljohn Raftopoulos. After meeting in New York, they returned to Athens to participate in the recent dynamic transformations of the Greek architectural landscape. Their work addresses the critical interpretation of existing physical and cultural forms, while ongoing theoretical interests are developed through the unique considerations of each project. AREA also contributes to architecture magazines, exhibitions and teaches a design studio at the University of Thessaly. Among numerous awards, AREA received 1st prize in 2007 in an open competition for 220 houses near Thessaloniki. In 2009, their entry for the Art Fund Pavilion International Competition (UK) was among five finalists out of 600 entries. And this year AREA received one of the five equal awards in the AthinaX4 urban competition.
