As a designer and researcher I'm interested in what happens when electronic devices become everyday objects, and in how our relationships with them (and through them) develop in subtle and complex ways. What happens when the emotional and irrational aspects of being human contrast sharply, or even conflict with, the functioning of electronic devices and systems? While scientific models of "users" emphasise predictability and consistency - neither of them common traits of human beings - Design can instead embrace ambiguity and leave room for interpretation.
