When asked to extend and renovate an existing hotel, we were interested in reinforcing the public role of the Lobby. A hotel lobby is the most public and cosmopolitan place of the private spaces of the city. If the rooms are the mass that protects the inhabitant from the strange place in which he dwells, the lobby is a void that connects him with the city. If the mass is organized with architecture, the void is formed with the urbanism of multiple programs (bar, saloons, restaurant, etc.) to multiple encounters of multiple people from all over the world. Accepting the importance of the generic and standard to bring familiarity in an alien environment, the hotel also needs something that makes us particular and remembered, a “memorable space”: the courtyard of the NM Lima Hotel under the singular climate of Lima.
