Rainbow in the Desert
Lima, Peru
The absence of rain in Peruvian coast makes extreme living conditions in the informal settlements. In Pachacutec, children live in the sand without any shade or greenery, while their parents work all day in the city 2 hours away. By initiative and funding of renowned chef Gastón Acurio we have built an orchard and a kitchen where children (age 3-5) can learn to grow their food and cook it together with their teachers, parents and grandparents with their traditional recipes. This will not only strengthen their identity but also teach them in healthy food habits and table sharing. Now, how to make an orchard on the sand and without water? We worked alternative techniques of soil improvement and usage of a great variety of low water consuming crops.
