Sesto San Giovanni was, in its boom years, a major manufacturing centre and was well known for its role in the history of Italian workers’ movements and trade unions. By the 1990s, however, most of the major companies in the area had closed their factories, including Falck’s steel factories, and their sites had been largely abandoned, creating a fracture in the town’s urban landscape.
