hotel and spa leisure club development
harwell, oxford, uk - 2002
a three star hotel and an adjacent new leisure club & spa. the two components were conceived as a single concept albeit to occupy two physically separate but closely related buildings. the design questions the typology and separation that usually occurs between the reception area, lift access, corridors and bedrooms. by organising the bedrooms along a series of offset, shallow ramps the space within the bedroom block becomes a top lit atrium that brings light to the individual bedrooms. the ramps begin within the double height reception area meaning the access sequence for hotel guests avoids the often used series of dark, disassociated, secular spaces often found in hotels.
