The design of Vladimir Gortan square is taken into consideration as an urban task where the relation with the surroundings and existing structures influences the design and the tectonic configuration of spaces in order to stress the traditional role of the square as a meeting and gathering space that literally encourages communication and cultural exchange. The result is a reinterpretation of the ‘Italian piazza’ where the open space has the character of a void obtained by the subtraction of elements from a solid volumes that bounds the area. The width, freedom and emptiness of the square constitutes the ‘void’ that, with its hard and mineral artificiality, contrasts the natural and organic quality of the ‘filled in’ elements, a series of green masses that reminds of the Italian geometric gardens.
