Science Center Wels
Wels, Upper Austria - fourth prize
Ecological and architectural progress is combined in the building of the Science Center Wels in a confident unity. Designed as a passive house, the futuristic appearing building features excellent energy efficiency. The design is based on high technology car design as an architectural statement. The surface is minimized and its´ orientation optimized for the solar heat and photovoltaic panels, which are integrated part of the southerly facade, while the northerly facade is covered with vegetated panels acting as natural CO2 and NOx absorber. This first passive museum not only produces its own energy demands, but also feeds into the public power grid. A central massive energy storage wall, as well as vacuum and translucent insulation, complete the intelligent building design.
