Historically, cemeterial architecture draws to a an ancient and immutable compositional language, made of solemnity, symmetry, perspective and large horizontal spaces: a subliminal materialization of memento mori. With the Polesella project we chose to rethink the cemetery from the point of view of those who, on their way to pay a homage to the dead, first of all recall their personal attachment to the dear ones they have lost. Our approach lead to the design of a large garden consisting of a system of small introverted spaces , designed to make the commemoration of those who no longer live a calm and natural action, to be lived in intimacy and contemplation.
