Monastiraki, Athens
The entire complex is a typical internal Athenian yard as built during the 19th century. The existing buildings are dated back to 1870 and consist of a main building and an internal yard surrounded by two more buildings divided in18 studios of 10 sq. m each. The PVC membrane roof which covers the internal yard is consisted of an irregular grid of rods suspended from umbrella structures of different heights. The structure is fully dismountable over the summer period without leaving traces of any structural elements. The apparent signs of decay and erosion and the use of light allow the past to coexist with the present. The renovation was carried out to fit the needs of an innovative concept aiming to present international contemporary art to a wider public and by doing so, encouraging discussion and debate, a modern interpretation of the Greek Agora.
