Whittier Narrows Basin, CA, USA
The last dam to be completed by the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers in its regional flood control scheme over Los Angeles, occurs at Whittier Narrows. The flood control basin encompasses 1500 acres of land, engineered to accommodate a 100yr flood event. On these grounds, today designated as a Recreational Area, a variety of landscapes are to be found, ranging from natural reserve and agricultural, to golf courses and shooting ranges. The proposal focuses on the relationship between the mythologies of climate and natural disasters, in order to examine the urban organization of Los Angeles in general and suggest an alternative spatial paradigm.
