Located on a unique lot at the edge of a hillside overlooking Benedict Canyon, the residence stems from a formal exploration of two site conditions: the suburban Cul-de-Sac and the Hillside. The proposal develops a scheme shielded from the street (close) and projecting towards the hillside (open). The residence responds to the existing topography with partially sunken areas, leading to spatially dynamic interiors. The progression from the underground to the top level is marked by transparencies and openings to the outdoor, each establishing a distinct relationship to the ground and sky. Elements and materials “slip” past each other, blur distinctions and project towards the canyon beyond.
