CONTINUOUS LAMINAE
London, UK, 2004–2005
Continuous Laminae is a biodegradable screening system made from laminated timber capable of modulating environmental conditions by utilising specific characteristics of timber; material properties on a micro-scale and manufacturing and assembly logics at a macro-scale.
The task was to develop a self-supporting system made of laminated wood that is capable of bearing wind loads that can cope with abrasion and utilize changes in relative humidity, while simultaneously modulating air flow and light intensities. In order to combine these performance requirements in one system two strategies were adopted: [i] continuous use of one material (laminated wood with no joints), [ii] use of curved geometries (assuring structural and material integrity while allowing for control of environmental dynamics through local differentiations).
