CAMPUS URBIS
Siracusa, Italy, 2007
Campus Urbis is a holistic model for coastal urbanization promoting urban development while reducing its environmental impact, integrating natural and urban dynamics and transforming polluting agents into new resources. The project proposes a university pole which involves major resources of Siracusa: industry, agriculture, historical and natural patrimony converge into a hub for knowledge production and work as an engine for a sustainable city growth. Through research into local officinal plants and essences, the centre provides an opportunity for re-conversion of the nearby chemical plants towards pharmaceutical, cosmetic and food industries. The core of the programme is an open campus spread along the coastal park and forming four nodes which act as activators of a larger programmatic and infrastructural network.
