Current planning practice is driven by the segregation of activity. The underlying zoning principles of land use date back to the time when different functions in rapidly growing cities had to be protected from each other. In the past century transport networks have also been increasingly separated. This form of urban planning has produced wasteful cities which are largely dependent on inter-regional in- and out-flows, causing unlimited transport and choking infrastructures. Recyclicity is a strategy to transform a monofunctional district to a symbiotic community for living and working. The systematic local shortcutting of currently disconnected flows of food, energy, water and money is replaced by an integrated and regenerative process. At the same time local markets and trade will strengthen economic activity and create a new identity.
