Saksen Weimar
Arnhem - selected
In 2006 Buro Lubbers won the most prestigious development competition in the Netherlands for a new residential area in Saksen Weimar, Arnhem. Where soldiers once held sway and artists created their studios, Buro Lubbers designed a unique plan that transforms the former barracks site into an on-Dutch residential quarter. An apparently simple intervention, namely the excavation of terraces, leads to specific landscape requirements for a particular living, working and leisure environment. Thus, houses on sunny slopes oriented on the South are interspersed with an urban square where culture and leisure, dwelling and working meet. An extensive network of ramps, stairs and retaining walls, emphasises the altitude differences in the wooded landscape.
