A Town Landmark
Israel / West Bank - third prize
3. Prize 789 entries, 2005 Jury: Kengo Kuma, Toyo Ito and more. A 720-km separation barrier is currently being constructed by Israel, mainly within the West Bank, partly along the 1949 "Green line". The wall is a landmark, which no one can be proud of. As a result, Palestinian communities are barred in enclaves, villages are separated for their means of livelihood, olive trees are uprooted and infrastructures are being destroyed. Our proposal is located along the green line, introducing a landmark within the landmark, symbolizing opposite realities. The intervention redesigns the wall's prefabricated elements, transforming them into an identical double-sided climbing wall. By challenging the wall and defy boundaries, the barrier is transformed into a free-zone. The landmark is the people.
