Johann Gutenberg High School
Erfurt - first prize
In a competion in 2003 the design of Schmidt Llandscape Architects and Koch+ Partner Architects won the first prize. The challenge was a extension of the Johann Gutenberg High School. The design breaks through the solitary nature of the Wilhelmine building and underlines both its symmetry and its presence in the urban environment. The new building develops into a major “communications platform” that is connected by an open stairway to the newly laid-out Gutenberg Square. The school courtyard extends from the roof of the new building over terraced areas into a sunken area. It contains play areas and theme gardens broken up by covered and green areas. The character of the new development is transparent and open to the surrounding, inviting to be explored.
