Elisabethan Theatre
Gdansk, Poland - first prize
The theatre embraces the traditional building methods of the old town, whilst providing new and exciting interior and public areas. We have used theatrical techniques throughout the spaces, including a play of materials through light and photographic images. The foyer, for example, casts shadows of people using the spaces, both literally and through artificial means. Our main strategic move involved redirecting the traffic to form a new public space outside the wall of the theatre area. Part of the theatre wall is removable, providing a theatre in the round close to the Elisabethan theatre. The theatre space is also totally flexible to allow different configurations, including an artificial sky for fencing, to mimic the conditions of traditional jousting at dawn.
