The Square is situated at the intersection of a state street and a highway and functions as an entrance to the location of the United Nations offices in Bonn. A strong horizontal surface topography, an almost monochromous planting scheme and the vertical curtain like flagpoles create a unique coherent and driveable open space sculpture. To present the 220 flags of the UN-members a prototype flagpole was designed, whith built in flag illumination. The structure is emphasized and tied together by stripes of large scale concrete slabs, stripes of broken lava, planting stripes with lavender, veronica, sage and grasses.
