Parkway Iconic Bridge (2007)
Sheffield, UK
The bridge is an elegant physical manifestation of rhythms and movements of its users: pedestrian, cyclists and equestrians. For drivers, the bridge has two faces depending on their direction – the stainless steel and acrylic clad side glistens in the horizon while connecting the surrounding landscape. At night, it gives the illusion of abstracted light leaping across the motorway. The glass face describes the virtual weightlessness of the structure, and glows with light transmitted through the material. Pedestrians stroll across semi-frosted glass with slip-prevention black rubber studs. Cyclist and horses move across solid black asphalt surface, providing a durable surface with low maintenance. The heat absorbent asphalt, together with heating coils to a thermopile system, will provide self-sustainable solar lighting.
