The Workshop
Sheffield
In this project we extended a stone built Victorian villa to provide new studio facilities for a high profile graphic and web design company. The new building is formed by three elements: An understated dark rendered 'box' provides a simple recessive envelope of single and two storey accommodation; An ashlar stone elevation forms a 'bookend' against the street, matching the delicate pink sandstone of the quoins and cills of the existing building; And a series of metal 'tables' form a new entrance portico and a series of monitor roof lanterns to the studio at the rear. Constructed in bronze anodised aluminium, the tables refer to the rich and filigree metal structures which often append Victorian Houses, as well as echoing the form of a stripped, classical portico. The portico is proportioned to scale the extension in relation to the existing villa, whilst defining the new single point of entry to the building.
