Tinsley Cooling Towers
Sheffield UK - finalist
The site as a whole is conceived as post industrial meadow – an inner city pastoral landscape that combines highly programmed elements of public performance, art space and nature reserve with loosely defined, but formally specific, areas of grass land and undulating topography. In order to facilitate such a large area being given over to public parkland the North and South Eastern edges of the site are programmed with small scale commercial office space. This office space is tucked beneath the Tinsley Viaduct and also forms a hard edge to the sewage treatment plant to the north – this brackets and shelters the site but at the same time provides an active internal face with the possibility of galleries, cafes and workspace. The intention is that this space would be let to young start up businesses, such that a turnover of fresh ideas and activities is introduced to the site.
