The New Mersey Observatory (2008)
Liverpool, UK - finalist
The new Mersey Observatory presents a unique 21st Century icon for Liverpool reflecting the city’s strong sense of identity, a sculptural structure rather than a building, something which people will want to come and see from all over the world. The design comprises an elegant V-shaped rib cantilevering an observation deck 33 meters above the Mersey, and a visitors pavilion on the ground. The construction method will ensure minimal environmental impact. The structure can be seen from land, sea and sky - miles away, day and night. The observation deck, designed as a scenic compass, circum-locates the various sights of interest via a constellation of embedded glass lenses; “Liverpool” is the first name upon arrival on the deck. A continuous linear low energy LED lighting system is mounted onto the main rib to accentuate the observatory’s sculptural features and to promote its identity - an elegant red V-shaped illumination at night.
