Tangshan Earthquake Memorial Park (2007)
Tangshan, China - second prize
There are no statues, there are no monuments and furthermore there are no inscribed names to commemorate the 240,000 lives lost in the 1976 earthquake. However, if you walk through the new proposal for Tangshan Memorial Park, you are conscious at every turn of the past, from the earthquake ruin to the subtle ground imprints reminding one of the activities. Together with the river of flowers, the battalion of poplar trees and the ceramic memorial carpets, these vignettes metaphorically propagate the park’s strategic ideas of absence and traces to uncover the archaeology of memories.
