VERGERIJ SQUARE
Koper - second prize
A square can be understood as an »empty« space; a space that can be (within an urban context) stripped down to the status of a void inside the city shell. Such places generate the tension necessary to establish a suitable atmosphere and understanding between forms. The void can be defined as a negative (of the city) - opposite to the buildings, which limit and determine the void - and labelled a positive space. The energetic synergy helps to build the atmosphere and the story of the space as a whole; that story inspires the space with architectural meaning, it makes an ambience out of it. The void therefore represents a polygon for designing/creating spatial/ambient tensions, relationships and ratios between the positive and the negative, forming the basis of architectural planning.
