The Ferry on the Rotte (Rottepont = Rotteferry) was one of the first results in the Recyclicity principal: reuse of waste for new projects, investing a low amount of energy for transport and processing. Monthly a cable reel factory in Delft disposes of 200 cable reels. For ‘Galerie op de Rotte’ 2012Architecten transformed six of those reels into a ferry. The Rotteferry is a new connection between two neighbourhoods in Rotterdam. It is not the most efficient way to get to the other side, but it is by far the most fun and besides that good for your health. The Rotteferry is a variant on the foot ferry, which is pulled to the other side with use of a winch and a cable. In this case the cablereels are the winches. When a passenger is pushing on the upper reel, the lower four reels are set in motion and pull the complete object to the other side on two cables. After the manifestation parts of the ferry are reused as a play structure.
