Zollverein Park - Signage System 2005-2010
Zeche Zollverein, Essen - first prize
This project is a collaboration with Christopher Ledwig [F1RSTDESIGN.COM] who as part of a design team consisting of landscape architects [PLANERGRUPPE-OBERHAUSEN.DE], artists [OBSERVATORIUM.ORG], and lighting designer [LICHTKUNSTLICHT.COM] is involved implementing the signage system for 'Zollverein Park' after winning an international competition in 2005. As a cross-discipline cooperation, architecture and communication design blends into the challenge of creating a new world of orientation, within a 100ha park - equivalent to 140 soccer fields - within the boundaries of Zollverein. Being in charge of initial studies continued by a masterplan, OMA/AMO portrayed the abandoned coal mine area - UNESCO World Heritage since 2001 - as the WALLED CITY. Not accessible in former times, Zollverein is now turning more and more into an open system within the urban fabric in the north of the city [ZOLLVEREINPARK.DE].
