Hydrographic Institute Extension
Lisbon - second prize
The Hydrographic Institute extension will become the coherence element in a series of separate interventions in the Trinas Convent grounds. Condensing a new hydrographic school, archives, bar and rectory in a single building, a low volume solution is adopted, allowing a clear reading of the convent and of the future laboratory building. The assumed strategy aims to clarify and respect what is now a protected heritage compound. A formal reminder of what used to be an ecclesiastical agricultural fence structure in the center of Lisbon, will be accentuated with the integration of the construction in the ground, defending that the Convent’s importance goes beyond the building itself, but works as a landmark in Lapa’s hill urban structure. The new building’s roof will work as the bar exterior space, a relaxation place with views over the city and the connecting point between the new building and the convent’s cloister.
