DAY TALKING NIGHT SINGING
Socrates Sculpture Park NY 1997
For this project I used ready-made components with an industrial history. All three objects have electronic „brains“and a simple language. The vocabulary includes different sounds, from a quiet buzzing to a nervous noise. The communication rules are simple. The probability to start a conversation depends on the quantity of light falling onto the sensor inside of each object. Since the objects are situated in different directions the probability to start the conversation is changing depending on daytime, sunlight and any cast shadows. During the daytime, the time of one conversation cycle and the duration of each single sound are short. In the darkness both events take much longer and therefore the sounds are changing into long, random melodies.
