The structure faces the Fanyu Road in the east portion of Shanghai, and a beautiful garden that was owned by the Sun Yatsen family is located on the West side. The client is one of the largest lighting/international business companies in China, and wanted a multipurpose building that integrated offices, a studio for lighting designers, and a guest house for overseas guests. Our answer to this problem was to leave the existing warehouse structure, and implement a conversion that provided the building with compound functions. We are currently performing work on two projects in Japan where the existing structure is preserved and converted to new uses, but we did not think that a conversion proposal would be accepted in China where the current trend is to scrap and build.
