autoinducer_Ph-1 (cross cultural chemistry)
VIDA9.0 - mentioned
Autoinducer_Ph-1 (cross cultural chemistry) exploits traditional SE Asian rice cultivation techniques where Azolla is used as an organic, nitrogen rich fertilizer in paddies. In the installation the process is reworked in an overly complexified, laboratory style reflecting western agricultural techniques and modern ideas of nature. The installation features pond-like structures, electronics, laboratory and hydroponic equipment designed to probe into and manipulate the symbiotic relationship between the cyanobacteria Anabaena and the water fern Azolla. Notions of data and information systems inherent in the organic protagonists of the installation, and how they may be augmented, are realised by synthetic software-based bacteria that interact with them in dual assumed roles of symbiont and parasite.
