Kühnehöfe Hamburg
Hamburg - Altona
A network constructs a relationship between the objective surface of things and represents organizational structures. In its function as a formative structure, the basis for movement and its materiality, the network which spreads through the Hamburg building complex of the Kühnehöfe creates a textural parquet of interweaving pathways and interstices in the architecture of axthelm.frinken architects. The two-dimensional composition of the wooden surfaces which serve as entrance paths into the building make it clear that both the paths and gaps are of equal importance in the design of the multi-purpose courtyard. Diligent use of colour, material and plant textures abolishes the functional hierarchy of the access area, decks and path-nodes throughout the entire structure. And by illuminating the planted areas and pathways, the appreciation of the respective surfaces changes over the course of the day.
