Surveillance Space
New York, USA
Scene: Morningside Heights, Manhattan. Surveillance cameras affect the character and quality of the public space. The public space is understood as a field in a state of constant change, stimulated secretly by the cameras panning constantly with different speeds. installation: Recordings of this field by 4 cameras are projected at full room height in a circular hall. 4 lines move across the wall each documenting the viewing direction and panning velocity of a camera. The installation space becomes a surveillance vessel pulsating according to the changing quality of the observed public space. It generates a moving spatial and visual experience that otherwise just flourishes undetected.
