Flood defence and a landmark park for Goole
Goole
This concept design is part of the Humber Estuary Integrated Landscape and Investment Study and looks creatively at the need to increase the existing flood defence height by implementing the public open space. The elevated plaza functions as flood retention as well as community space with integrated facilities for recreation, entertainment and viewpoints over the estuary. The project aims at attracting people to the river side for a positive engagement with the water and surrounding landscape. The retained, existing green structure is augmented with native trees planted to highlight the linear shape of the park. The characteristic reedbeds on the fringe of the estuary is extended and reinterpreted, where appropriate, to suit a more formal and ornamental context. These concept design is complemented by a network of riverside routes for pedestrians (and in some cases for cyclists) which open up access to the riverside wetland landscape.
