design intent: this project attempt to keep the large open space in the center of the museum, and use this space as an articulation between the existing exhibition space and the new. a gentle undulating surfaces of the courtyard simultaneously provide smaller, more defined areas within this larger context for the extension of the restaurant, bar or café. the courtyard surface is respectful of the program located below by opening in various places to allow natural light into these spaces. rather than completely closing the experience of the lower level, the courtyard attempts to create visual connections to the space above and constantly remind visitors of other possibilities for experience.
