Urban Thickness
Roma
The handling of the thickness is chosen as the urban design method of intervention to
resolves the discontinuity, the fragmentation and the continuous transformation of the
city. This intervention is aimed to restore the image of the road axis in both dimensional
and socially level. Opening walkways in the banks’ thickness of the Tevere makes them
permeable and allows the crossing of it, promoting the river as a participating element in
the urban dynamics, no longer perceived as a barrier. Working on the thickness attempts
the re-definition of the relationship between empty and full, public and private spaces,
natural and artificial ones, and determines the habitability, the use and the permeability of
the city. With Chiara Meucci.
